Chapter Ten

“Freeze! Police!”

I raced through the trees as if I knew where I was going. I kept my eyes locked on the green figure ahead of me. When he threw down the rifle and tried to dodge his way around a tree, I forced my body to go faster.

I slammed into the man so that the two of us rolled across a bed of pine needles and leaves. I shifted my weight until I was on top of him, then pointed my firearm at the back of his head.

"I said freeze, asshole." I growled deep in my throat as I jerked my handcuffs off my hip. "Put your hands behind your back. Now!"

The man was shaking when he did what I told him to do. Maybe he could tell I was two seconds away from pulling the trigger. He'd shot Scott. He'd taken a shot at me.

Oh, hell no. He'd go to jail for that alone.

I snapped the metal cuffs closed around the man's wrists. I pulled him up until his legs were sticking out in front of him. I saw movement to my left then pointed my firearm in that direction.

"Put your hands up where I can see them and come out. Slow."

A girl no younger than eighteen stepped out around the tree she had been hiding behind. Her blonde hair was matted against her cheeks. Her eyes were bloodshot and teary.

"Help me." She whimpered. "Please. Help me."

"Breanna? James?" Scott jogged over to where I had the girl at gunpoint and the man detained. "What are you two doing out here?"

"You know them?" I took a minute to look Scott over. The color was coming back to his face. There was blood around a bullet hole in his uniform, so I knew he'd been hit. “Sit down. I'll call for medical assistance.”

“I don't need it.” He brushed me off. “Alright, you two, what's going on?”

“What do you mean, you don't need it-”

“Drop it, Agent.” He looked over at the people I'd detained. “Now what were you doing?”

“This is all a big misunderstanding.” The man glared at me before confusion clouded his expression. “What's going on? Bree? What are you doing?”

“I can't -” The girl sobbed harder. “He just went crazy, yelling at me for being a witch. I can’t-”

“Ok.” I stood up and pulled the man up to his feet. “Let's go to the station. We can talk there.”

“Agent, that's not such a good idea.” I whipped around to see Scott extend his hand out. He sighed then wiggled his fingers at me. “Your keys.”

“Excuse me?” I snapped at him. “First off, we don't know what was going on here. Second of all, he shot you! I am not letting him out of my sight until I get some answers.”

“We can't detain him. Please. Just give me the keys.”

I entered into stare down with Scott. One that I lost despite the fact I knew I was in the right. I unhooked my keys then tossed them at him. I couldn't watch as he freed James from the handcuffs so I focused on the girl instead.
